How to Keep Reading Through the Busy Holiday Season (Without Stress)

Two things can be true at the same time.

You love to read. It makes you happy, brings you joy, and fills you up.

And… the holidays are busy. Like really busy.

Between the cooking, the shopping, the gift wrapping, family coming into town, end-of-year work obligations, and trying to hold it all together, reading can quickly feel like the first thing to fall off the list.

If you’ve been wondering how to keep reading during the busy holiday season without burning out, this guide is for you.

But let’s start here:

  1. Don’t stress.

  2. Don’t give up.

If there’s one thing that is true, it’s this:

You deserve to carve out time, however small, to do the things you love. And if reading is one of those things, it doesn’t stop mattering just because the calendar is full.

So let’s talk about realistic, pressure-free ways to keep reading through the holidays.

Lean Into Novellas and Short Stories

This is the season of high impact, low page count.

Novellas and short story collections are perfect when your time and energy are limited. You can read a little before bed, make real progress, and still absorb a complete, beautiful story without committing to a long stretch of focus.

Most novellas are under 200 pages, and there are plenty of great options, especially if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber.

These books respect your time, and that matters in December.

Let Audiobooks Do the Heavy Lifting

Audiobooks are the unsung heroes of the holiday season.

Put on your headphones and keep it moving.

They’re perfect for:

  • cooking

  • cleaning

  • wrapping gifts

  • driving

  • standing in long lines

Audiobooks allow you to keep reading without having to stop living.

And yes, they absolutely count. Always.

Revisit a DNF (Did Not Finish)

This is a gentle one.

Think about a book you started earlier this year. You made a decent dent, but maybe the timing was off. You weren’t in the right mood, or life got in the way..

That book might be perfect now.

You’ve already done part of the work. Sometimes all you need to do is pick it back up and see if it hits differently in a new season.

And if it still doesn’t? You’re allowed to put it back down. No guilt.

Lower the Bar (On Purpose)

Holiday reading is not the time for unrealistic expectations.

You don’t need hours.

You don’t need silence.

You don’t need the “perfect” moment.

Sometimes reading looks like:

  • 10 pages before bed

  • one chapter while the house is quiet

  • a short lunch break escape

  • 20 minutes with a timer and a closed door

Set the timer. Close the door. Refuse to be bothered by anything except what’s happening between the pages of your book.

Even 20 minutes counts.

Remember Why You Read in the First Place

Reading isn’t another task on your to-do list. It’s not something you earn after everything else is done.

It’s something that sustains you.

During the holidays, when so much of your time and energy is given to other people, reading can be a way to pour a little back into yourself.

You’re allowed to protect that.

A Final Reminder

If your reading looks different this season, that’s okay. If it’s slower, shorter, or more sporadic, that’s okay.

If all you do is keep the habit alive in small ways, that’s more than enough.

You don’t have to stop being a reader just because life is busy.

You’re still allowed to read, especially during the holidays. 📚✨
