Dee's Monthly Book Drop: My Most Anticipated Black Author Releases for August 2026
One of my favorite things every month is seeing what Black authors are about to put out into the world.
Now, this isn't meant to be an exhaustive list of every Black release coming out this month.
There are way too many great books for that. These are simply the books I'm most excited to get my hands on. Some are from auto-buy authors. Some are from authors I'm finally getting around to reading. And some had me hooked after one paragraph of the synopsis.
Let's get into it.
Ghost in the Night by Tiffany D. Jackson
Release Date: August 4
Can we just go ahead and acknowledge something?
Tiffany D. Jackson doesn't miss.
Yes, this is YA.
No, I do not care.
Give me a haunted Savannah ghost tour, an unsolved murder, and Tiffany D. Jackson behind the keyboard, and I'm already in.
The fact that Harmony is investigating whether she actually captured a ghost on camera, only for it to spiral into a murder investigation?
Baby...say less.
I'm ready.
The Ladies Hall by Vanessa Miller
Release Date: August 11
If you've followed me for any amount of time, you already know historical fiction is one of
my favorite genres.
This one follows Mary Church Terrell, Anna J. Cooper, and Ida Gibbs during their time at Oberlin College as they challenged racism, sexism, and the expectations placed on Black women in the late 1800s.
I love stories about real women whose names deserve to be spoken more often. I love stories about friendship. And I especially love stories about Black women making history together instead of waiting for permission.
This one feels like it's going to check every box for me.
A Very Special Episode by Camille Acker
Release Date: August 16
This is my new-to-me author pick for the month.
The synopsis completely had me locked in.
A powerful Black social organization. Family legacy. A woman trying to modernize an institution. A wealthy benefactor whose motives don't seem quite right. And somewhere in the middle of all that...a mystery.
It sounds like social commentary wrapped inside a thriller, which is one of my favorite combinations.
I'm always excited to discover a new author, and this feels like a good place to start.
Beneath the Dawn by Brenda Jackson
Release Date: August 18
Listen...
Brenda Jackson has earned my trust.
Every time I pick up one of her books, she reminds me exactly why she's been doing this for decades.
And yes...she never disappoints when it comes to the chemistry.
This one has childhood history, neighbors-to-lovers vibes, a woman hiding from danger, and a man connected to a Sicilian mafia family who is willing to protect her at all costs.
Romance.
Suspense.
Spice.
I'm not asking for much.
Dèy by Edwidge Danticat
Release Date: August 25
This synopsis had me from the very beginning.
A Haitian American woman survives a random act of violence and then has to figure out what survival actually means afterward.
That alone would've been enough.
But then you add family, grief, identity, Haiti, Miami, motherhood, and all of those complicated relationships we carry with us our entire lives?
Yeah...
I have a feeling this one is going to stay with me long after I finish it.
Sometimes you can just tell when a book is going to make you sit quietly for a while after the last page.
This feels like one of those books.
